2020. Portland, Oregon. USA. Arrest. Portland has seen over 100 nights Of protests after George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis. The largely non violent protests have been met with arrests, pepper balls, stun grenades and other “less than lethal munitions” from Portland Police. During clashes with Federal Agents in July and August, tear gas was often deployed. By the time I arrived in Portland in late September, the protests seemed to have taken on a choreography of sorts, with speeches from a range of activists decrying police injustice and white complacency shifting to confrontations with police. I was present for two protests. The protestors were largely non violent, taunting police and blocking roads though in one instance a Molotov cocktail was thrown at advancing police. The police tactics tended to rely on pepper balls and bull rushes to disperse and fragment the gathered crowd. A number of police acted with naked aggression, violently shoving protestors and marked press, including in one instance a 73 year old photographer who fortunately was wearing a helmet and escaped serious injury.
