IRAQ. Mount Sinjar. August 12, 2014. A Yazidi girl who was severely injured in an Iraqi airforce helicopter crash in Mount Sinjar lies unconscious onboard a second rescue helicopter on its way to Iraqi Kurdistan. The girl and her family, along with thousands of other Yazidis, were fleeing persecution at the hands of Islamist extremists who had recently taken over their hometowns in Iraq's Ninevah province. In the high grounds of Mount Sinjar, they found safety from ISIS, but also the risk of dying from hunger and thirst. The girl and her mother were transported to a hospital in Zakho, but it is unclear if the girl survived.
