INDONESIA. BALI. Ubud. Bedulu. One of the most exciting dances of Bali is the "ketjak", known as the Monkey Dance, in which the men from an entire village take part. The only music coming from their chanting and strange vocal effects. The movements of the bodies, the swaying to and fro, the raising of arms with out stretched hands are suggestive of an army of monkeys. In the centre is Wajang Hembak, the mayor of the village, Bedulu. In the "ketjak" he plays the King of the Apes who leads his troupes of monkeys into a fierce battle against an arch-enemy. 1953.
