Africa. Rwanda. Nkombo Island. Lake Kivu. A yard from the lake's edge, women traditionally have dug a hole and filtered the water through the sand, believing that this makes it clean. This water is used for drinking. The women pour the water into 20 litre jerrycans by the cupful, taking hours to fill them.
