Italy. Puglia. Monte S Angelo. The church of St Michael is built into and above a cave at the place where the archangel Michael is said to have visited three times. It has been a site of pilgrimage from earliest times, attracting popes as well as the ordinary pilgim. Here two visitors stand in front of a statue of St Michael, who was as famed as a dragon killer as St George, together with offerings to the saint. 2012
