Tree 81, Lance Sergeant George Herbert Greenwood, The Avenue of Honour, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
The Ballarat Avenue of Honour is significant as the earliest known memorial avenue to have been planted in Victoria, Australia. The trees were planted in order of the soldiers enlistment ( from Ballarat and surrounds) , and stretched some 22km along the Western Highway, consisting of 3,771 trees.? On 3 June 1917, the first 1,000 trees in the Avenue were planted by staff from the local textile mill E. Lucas & Co. Just over two years later the final planting took place on 16 August 1919, with a total of 3,771 trees.
Lance Sergeant George Herbert Greenwood 287 8th Battalion A.I.F.
Enlisted: Aged 20 years: 18th August 1914 (Wounded & Missing. On or about April 25th 1915)
Following is copy from 8 A.I.F. Orderly Room book:-
“Sgt. Merrit of 8 A.I.F. stated at Inquiry held by O.C. of Battalion that he saw Greenwood at the furthest point reached in the attack of April 25. When the order to retire was given informant saw Greenwood get up to retire but he never reached the position to which they retired.”

“…. We know that he drew his last pay on 20th April, 1915, and that he took part in the landing at Gallipoli with his unit on the 25th April, since when nothing has so far been discovered – this resulted in the Court of Inquiry deciding that he was killed in action on that date. It is more than probable he was one of those of whom no vestige remained or whose remains were unrecognizable, nevertheless we are hoping that
the operations of the Graves Unit now employed in the locality will clear
up many of these cases…”
