SYRIA. Serikani. Rojava. Baran Osman, 19, from Serikani.
"My father was murdered by ISIS in 2012 and I joined YPJ in 2013. I joined YPJ because I wanted to protect my country and the Rojava revolution. When ISIS attacked Serikani, I decided that I should get a gun and fight them. As a woman I have understood that women can have guns, defend themselves and others, and go to the frontlines. Before joining YPJ, I was at home all the time, washing the dishes, tidying up the house, cooking for my family and other similar tasks. The only hobby I had was watching TV. But when I joined YPJ, my world changed. I don't recognize the old Baran anymore. I have forgotten her. Now I have ideology and I fight for it with my gun. I am a much happier person now."
