According to Struan Robertson, this is a maid’s room with spartan interior. Here she sits on an apple-box with a newspaper and a doily for a cushion. She has an aluminium teapot (the cheapest kind), a chipped tin mug and plate. Her one luxury seems to be an old chest of drawers, probably thrown out by the family.
