KAZAKHSTAN. 2013. Former Aral Sea on the road from Aralsk to Jambul. The Aral Sea used to be the fourth largest lake on earth. Water diversions for Soviet cotton irrigation beginning in the 1960s caused it to shrink to a tiny fraction of its original size, and this has affected the ecology and climate of the entire region. The former seabed lies half in Kazakhstan and half in Uzbekistan.
