MONGOLIA. Ulaanbaatar/Dogan Had. 2010. Professional shamans from Ulaan Bataar bring their students to the countryside to speak with their ancestor spirits for the first time. They set up gers inside a sacred area whose perimeter they marked with string and begin the long series of rituals and sacrifices that will last the whole weekend. Here a young shaman initiate throws milk to the spirits. Every shaman's costume is uniquely decorated, with animal references related to the individual's ancestor spirits.
