CHINA. Kashgar. 2009. The Chinese government is in the process of tearing down the Old Town in Kashgar, whose perimeter extends several kilometers, to replace traditional Uighur homes with modern Chinese buildings. The Old Town is deemed dangerous, but many claim this is the government's attempt to hold a tighter grip on the Uighurs, who cannot be controlled easily from within Old Town's maze of homes and alleyways. Uighurs are not permitted to protest the government's demolition of their homes. Instead, they work day after day tearing down their own homes to salvage some of the decor and building materials.
