Newsha Tavakolian
IRAN. Zardkuh, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari. 2018. Ghanbari sisters - from right Zohreh, 16 years old, Hediyeh, 14 years old, Sedigheh 27 years old wearing black after their sister’s young husband death a year ago. Sedigheh“It’s really hard for me to take of black. I’m really sad.” Their widow sister is in her 20s and has 2 children. In Bakhtiari tradition widow women are not allowed to marry again and they have to raise their children alone. The only expectation is that if they marry their brother in law. Hedieh is engaged and she postponed the wedding to the next year because of her sister’s husband death. Their family are divided. Some of them, like Sedigheh, live in town and some still live a nomadic life. Girls mostly move to the city after their marriage.
