POLAND. PL. Warsaw. 02.2012..
The primary water intake station “Fat Kate” supplies about 20% of water to the whole of Warsaw’s right bank. About 100 thousand m3 of water are pumped out from under the riverbed every 24 hours. “Fat Kate” is home to 8 clams testing the cleanliness of the water extracted from under the river. If the water is contaminated, the clams first close, then die. They are replaced every 3 months. The clams are situated 40 cm below the level of the extracted water. The suction chamber at “Fat Kate” (–30 m) above which the clams are located is the lowest space accessible to man under the Vistula.(c) Rafal Milach
