HOLLAND. Deventer. March 25, 2019.
Humanitas dementia centre. Gradus Haverkoek (83) was born in a trailer park in Deventer. His family owned a fair so they were travelling a lot. His job as a child was to sell tickets for the carousel. In that time, it was not mandatory to go to school so he only went to school in wintertime when the fair was less busy. Next to school he was helping a man repair clocks.
He taught everything himself he explains. Gradus really enjoys mechanisms. He always liked the carousel and doing the maintenance on the machine. His grandmother always wanted the carousel to be shiny and Gradus agreed.
Years ago Gradus started to create a love for antique in which he made a living. He started to go to flee markets in the Netherlands and in Germany to collect antique furniture to re sell it. Around the same time, he became fascinated by antique clocks and taught himself to repair them when they were in a bed shape. He bought second hand clock magazines to find out how much worth clocks were he found on the markets.
So far he repaired over 500 clocks.
