Greece’s unemployment rate climbed to a record 26 percent in 2015. The deepening slump has been exacerbated by spending cuts and tax increases imposed to trim a budget deficit. The economy shrunk as much as 4.5 percent in 2013 but the shrinking has slowed to 1.5% in 2015.
More than 350,000 Greeks—accounting for 3% of the nation’s population—left the country between 2010 and 2013.
