TURKEY. Suruc. March, 2015.
A boy tries to tame a horse during Newroz celebration in the Turkish border town of Suruc, across the Syrian town of Kobane.
In July of 2015, an ISIS suicide bomber blew himself up in Suruc amid a group of young volunteers getting ready to travel to Kobane on a humanitarian mission, killing 32.
The bombing in Suruc was a turning point in the conflict in southeast Turkey. The PKK blamed the Turkish government for the attack, saying the government is conspiring with ISIL. This anger of the PKK contributed to PKK revenge attacks. Many people in southeast Turkey are increasingly critical of the state for imposing the curfews, but also of the PKK for bringing the fight into their cities. A so-called "peace process" between the Turkish state and the PKK has officially been underway since early 2013, but conditions on the ground tell a very different story. Most people in southeast Turkey believe their region is steadily marching back toward civil war.
