MYANMAR (Burma). Inle, Shan. 1986. Lake Inle, a long, narrow lake covering an area of 158 square kilometers, is located 550 meters above sea level near Taung-gyi, the capital of Shan State. About ninety thousand members of the Intha tribe live in some two hundred settlements on the lake's shores and on the lake itself. The Intha earn their living by fishing and by raising vegetables in floating fields. The men in the tribe are taught an unusual skill - they row their small fishing boats with one foot-propelled oar. The peak fishing season is duirng March, which is summer here.
