MYANMAR (Burma). Mandalay. 1978. Until Burma became a British colony, Mandalay was the last capital city of the Burmese kings. The palace, surrounded by a moat and high walls and made of fine wood, was destroyed during World War II. From Mandalay Hill, it is possible to see the great scale of the former palace. Part of it was rebuilt in recent years, but it hardly resembles the original structure. The land on the north side of the hill is agricultural. I was impressed by the sight of a boy and a girl of a farmer's family standing in the road with a beautiful red sunset and Mandalay Hill in the background.
