BELARUS. Chernobyl area. 2000. Fire Captain Ivan Shavre was in the second platoon of firefighters sent to extinguish the fires at the nuclear generation plant. The radiation was so intense that firefighters were limited to a 45-minute exposure time on the roof. Shavre fell unconscious in his first shift and woke up two days later in Moscow hospital that was filled with firefighters. Hundreds died within the first year from the exposure to radiation. Shavre is a lucky survivor, but he remains tormented.
