WEST BANK. Qalqilya. February 2003. A caged bird and boy sit beside the Separation Wall (nicknamed the "Apartheid Wall") in the village of Qalqilya. Israel began construction of an 8-meter high concrete wall, complete with turrets, to separate Israel from the Occupied Territories in June 2002. The wall illegally runs 700 meteres into Palestinian territory, consuming 10% of the West Bank and resulting in the confiscation and bulldozing of Palestinian olive groves and much of the best farmland. When finished, the will run for 350 kilometers (220 miles), cutting off Palestinian villages from the West Bank and leaving tens of thousands of Palestinians unemployed.
