On January 15, 1997 Israeli Prime Minister Binvamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Yasir Arifat reached an agreement for the immediate redeployment of Israeli troops from the West Bank town of Hebron. Israeli troops are now to confine themselves to protecting the 450 or so Israeli Jews inhabiting settlements.
