LEBANON. Jiyyeh. November 2006. Melted oil containers. The Jiyyeh power plant was bombed at the beginning of the war. It burned for a month, causing the largest environmental disaster in Lebanon's history. The destruction resulted in 10,000 - 15,000 tons of heavy fuel oil spilling into the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon's coastline was contaminated and toxic discharge reached Syria.
