SOUTH PACIFIC. November 5th, 1943 on board the US aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. A rear seat gunner, wounded in the leg, is lifted from the cockpit of a Dauntless dive bomber upon the return to the aircraft USS Saratoga from the raid on Rabaul. The pilot with goggles on forehead (left background) is still in the cockpit. Captain John H. CASSADY, in command of the USS Saratoga, praised these rear seat men - the gunners and the radiomen - for their courage and skill.
