PERU. Lima. 2006. Lurigancho Prison. A transvestite barber. Inmates must earn money to increase their food ration and purchase commodities including beds. Some prisoners eat only leftovers from garbage cans and have no permanent place to sleep. The risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is 5 to 7 times higher in prison than in the streets. Gangs run the penitentiary with little interference from officials. Half the transvestite population is HIV positive.
