AFGHANISTAN. Bamian. 2003. Harvest in Bamian took place for 1,500 years under the gaze of mighty Buddhas hewn into a cliff. The Taliban, in one of their most widely condemned acts, destroyed the statues in 2001, calling them sacreligious. Many Bamian Muslims mourned the loss. As one said, "The Buddhas were a part of our culture, our history."
