Larry Towell
USA. South Dakota. August, 2012. Thousands of First Nations people criss-cross America every summer driving from reservation to reservation and sleeping in tents to compete in traditional song and dance circles. The songs have social, religious and healing relevance. American Indians have no writtten music, so some singers have commmitted to memory between between 3000 and 4000 songs in Lakota, Arapahoe, Cree and Cheyenne. Pine Ridge Powwow, Pine Ridge Reservation.
