The "Esala Perahera" is a famous procession in the honour of Buddha. It lasts ten days and ten nights during the full moon of Esala (month of the Ceylonese calendar across July and August). The temple of the Tooth of Buddha is the most important site of the ceremony. The biggest elephant who is the most the beautifully decorated carries the priest who holds the shrine of the precious tooth. The other four temples of the city dedicated to the gods Nata, Vichnou, Katagarama and Patina are also part of the procession.
