A. Abbas
SENEGAL. Ngor. The Layene sect is the more folkloric of the three Sufi brotherhoods of Senegal. Their annual pilgrimage celebrates the reappearing in 1881 of their prophet, Seydina Limahou Lahi, after 1000 years of hidding in a grotto by the sea near Dakar. Men chant the Zikr (mystical poems), accompanied with shoulder movements. Orthodox Muslims condemn dancing, one of the great art forms of Africa. 1988.
