Hiroji Kubota
CHINA. Daqing, Heilongjiang. 1982. In the winter in the cold northeastern part of China (former Manchuria), fishermen fish on rivers and lakes by opening holes through ice one to two meters thick. They feed nets through the holes to catch prized winter fish. These fish were once also numerous in the Songhua Jiang River, but because of water pollution they have almost disappeared there. Here in the manmade lake in Daqing, the catch includes carp, grass carp, and catfish. At temperatures reaching minus 40 degrees Centigrade, the fish freeze almost the instant they are pulled from the water.
