TAIWAN. 2001. Taiwanese soldiers are deployed to clean up the aftermath of an oil spill, which occurred near Kenting National Park in Pingtung in southern Taiwan. This environmental disaster resulted from a Greek vessel, the M.V. Amorgos, which ran aground on submerged reefs in Taiwan Strait on Jan. 14, 2001. All crewmembers are rescued. Taiwan's Environmental Protection Agency estimates that at least 1,150 tons of oil has spilled into the sea.
