JAPAN. Nara. Kashihara shrine. A Shinto priest, wearing his formal costume made of pure white silk, known as a "saifuku," attends a wedding ceremony. On the foreground is a "onusa," a branch of a sacred sakaki tree; in the background a "haraigushi", made of paper streamers is attached to a wooden stick. Both implements are used in purification rituals, known as "harae".
