THAILAND. Naisoi, Mae Hong Son 1999. The members of the Padaung Tribe in Kaya State in Myanmar (Burma) traditionally engage in farming. For more than ten years, however several hundred members of the tribe have been living as refugees after having escaped to Thailand from Myanmar because of the military government there. The Padaungs are not allowed to farm in Thailand and live on income earned from tourists attracted to the women of the tribe, called "giraffe women". From childhood, these women wear layers of brass rings around their necks. Indeed, Padaungs are also called the "long-neck" tribe.
