Hiroji Kubota
INDIA. Calcutta. 1999. Calcutta's air is polluted by emissions from motor vehicles with poorly maintained diesel engines, the smoke from factory chimneys, and the smoke from rusty incinerators on wheels used for burning trash in the city. When rain falls during the monsoon season, sewer water backs up onto the streets. Seen here are two barefooted bearers carrying heavy loads on their heads as they trudge along an uneven road.
