ITALY. The Adriatic Sea. US Navy 6th. Fleet NATO Battle Group, during conflict with Serbia over Kosovo. USS LEYTE GULF: Is a cruiser, one of 27 in the US Navy fleet, built at a cost of one and a half billion dollars each. It has probably the most sophisticated and advanced naval weapons system known to man. The AEGIS radar system is a computerised air defence system using SPY radar which has the power of one and a half million microwave ovens, This can track and detect virtually anything above the size of a pencil within a 200 mile radius. It uses the Vertical Launch system, with a total of 65 missiles, which can launch both Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles, and standard surface to air missiles. Capable of speeds up to 32 knots the ship is powered by twin DC10 jet engines. Computer operator in Combat Information Centre (CIC). 1999.
