CHINA. Shanghai. 1949. In September, "The Promotion" was playing in a theater. In this scene, Chiang Kaï-shek is in a rage against his wife's brother-in-law H.H. Kung, financier and former Kuomintang Minister of Finance. The play had been written when the Nationalists were still in power, but Communists rewrote it and heightened the satire.
