INDIA. “Women Changing India”. State of Gujarat. Ahmedabad. April 2010. Bahrampura Branch of Sewa Bank in a Muslim area of the old city. SEWA (Self Employement Women's Association), founded as a trade union by Ela Bhatt, in 1972. SEWA follows the Gandhian philosophy of non-violence and self-reliance. It builds up solidarity amongst women workers and is both an institution and a movement of economic change. The SEWA bank has helped to lift thousand of poor women out of poverty with its progressive policies and revolutionnary microfinance schemes.
