JAPAN. "Geiger Fukushima," manufactured by Sanwa Corporation in OTAMA (Fukushima). Janvier 20th, 2012.
A modest stainless welding factory that is transformed handicraft manufacturer of the so-called Geiger Fukushima, a portable geiger counter that allows to measure beta and gamma rays in the environment. "Japan used to produce the tube by itself until 1980s, but Geiger counter was a low-tech product", says Takashi KITSUNAI, 38, a technician of the company. "There was no future for the country in just producing it".
Today, this Geiger counter has also been adapted for use on the iPhone. Immediately after its release in November, there has been a flood of inquiries (more than 300 telephone calls per day) by people from inside and outside Fukushima.
Due to the high volume of orders, however, they are now experiencing some delay in assembling and shipping. The priority is given to the residents of Fukushima.
When we asked about the current situation in Fukushima, 38-year old technician said: "The snow melts in the spring, I'm scared. For the moment, the radiation levels are quite low here, but in spring, when water penetrates the soil, it will be different "
