INDIA. Mumbai. 2006. At the edge of the Khumbarwada, a SRA slum rehabilitation building is coming up, rising out of the slum structures. There have been numerous schemes and plans to redevelop Dharavi, and a number of highrise structures are dotted around the slum. However, most of these have failed, and often have become little more than vertical slums in the pace of a few years, with little follow-up maintenance. A vast amount of people in Dharavi have their workplaces inside their slum dwellings, meaning the transfer to a highrise building often impacts their ability to keep work.
Dharavi is one of Mumbai's biggest and longest standing slums. Home to somewhere between 600 000 and one million people, it is a beehive of recycling and manufacturing industries. However, Dharavi sits on prime real estate right in the heart of the booming megapolis, and is in close vicinity to the new Bandra-Kurla Complex, a new financial hub. Dharavi is now scheduled for redevelopment, meaning everything in the slum, for good and bad, is set to be demolished.
