The construction of the city in 1956 was a major event in the history of town planning. Located in the center of the country at a height of 1200 m, 940 km North East from the former capital Rio de Janeiro, its development opened the communication with the center of the country. Built by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and the town planner Lucio Costa, the city inaugurated in 1960, became the new capital of the country.
