IRAQ. Iraqi Kurdistan, Between the town of Halabja and the Iranian Border, PUK (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) territory. March, 2003. Area freshly liberated from control by al-Anzar Isalmic fighters. Peshmergas loot and check a former al-Anzar position and find "Roland" missiles, suicide bomber vests filled with TNT and detonators, chemicals and weapons. After a US backed attack and bombing, Peshmergas take control. al-Anzar, a fundamentalist Islamic group with alleged al-Qaeda ties and apparently backed by Saddam HUSSEIN's government, had controlled the region for several years. They were responsible for several suicide bombings against Kurdish targets and said to have been trying to produce chemical weapons.
