December 1989. A solderer prepares an anchoring unit of the "metal sheet pile cells" that are located in the base of the tower blocks which are built within the Seine riverbed. The site was at that time covered in water, it was not yet fully anchored within an outer wall of metal sheet pile which was filled later with concrete. Thus open to tidal changes and storms, it suffered the weathers of 3 major gales that winter.Workers were obliged to work day and night in accordance with low tides, or semi tides. This concrete island is the basic struture on which the massive Tower is built from which are anchored the cable stays that hold up the center of the bridge.apart from the Isle de la Cite, and the Ile St Louis both in Paris, there are no other natural islands on the Seine apart from this bridge's artificial one.
