September 19, 2022 marks the 70th anniversary of the US government banning Charlie Chaplin from re-entering the country after a trip to England, due to his association with 'communist organizations'. It would be 20 years before he would be permitted to return. Chaplin had been under suspicion of being sympathetic to causes related to the left, and had caught the anger of the government after he accused their efforts in suppressing communism as a denial of free speech and violation of civil rights. Though Chaplin lived in the US for over 40 years, he never became an American citizen.
