Stefan Wyszyński had just been made cardinal when the Polish government began holding trials and imprisoning priests due to their continued support of the anti-communist resistance. On September 25, 1953 he was imprisoned at Rywałd, and later placed under house arrest in Stoczek Klasztorny. He is credited for the survival of Polish Christianity in the face of its repression and persecution during the reign of the Communist regime, and is considered by many to be one of Poland's national heroes.
