Distro - CALIFORNIA: VINTAGE LABELS

Larry Towell

The state of California produces 50% of America’s 400 agricultural commodities of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts that rotate through an almost permanent growing season. Almost all of its 500,000 to 800,000 field workers are Latin American, particularly Mexican, with 40% being undocumented. While photographing field labor in San Joaquim Valley, Larry collected a variety of vintage labels once used on wooden crates, including a racist label for Carignane grapes and part of a wood crate for the United Farm Workers Union from the days of labor leader Caesar Chavez.
