Consignment - Tunisia gains independence from France. 

The Tunisian War of Independence occurred from 1952 to 1956 between France and a guerilla movement under Habib Bourguiba. Tunisia had been a French protectorate since 1881, but succeeded in gaining its independence after this war. Bourguiba became the first President of the new nation.
