Archive - April 17th 1975, Khmer Rouge take power

Magnum Photographers

April 2025 marks the 40th anniversary since the Khmer Rouge took power in Cambodia.
On 17 April 1975, Phnom Penh was captured by the Khmer Rouge, effectively ending the Cambodian Civil War. From this date to January 7, 1979, the Khmer Rouge perpetrated one of the greatest crimes of the 20th century. Nearly two million people died under the rule of the fanatical Communist movement, which imposed a ruthless agenda of forced labor, thought control, and mass execution on Cambodia.
