On August 23rd IS militants released images showing the destruction of the 2,000 year old Temple of Baalshamin. Considered to be the second most important structure at the ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra, the UN has said that this deliberate destruction of an archaeological landmark was a war crime. Last week Khaled al-Asaad, the former chief archaeologist of Palmyra was beheaded by IS forces.
This is the most recent demolition of ancient remains deemed symbols of idolatry by the IS.
