Le Nigeria situé dans le golfe de Guinée, est de loin le pays le plus peuplé d'Afrique avec plus de 140 millions d'habitants. Lorsque le pays obtient son indépendance totale en 1960, il est alors divisé en 3 régions disposant d'une large autonomie.
Dix années plus tard, la guerre du Biafra éclate, conflit civil entraînant la mort de un à deux millions de personnes, il verra la création de l'ONG Médecins sans frontières, sous l'impulsion des French doctors pour venir en aide aux réfugiés qui souffrent de la famine provoquée par le blocus terrestre et maritime du Biafra.
