Dolly the Sheep. The first cloned animal
Born on 5th July 1996, Dolly was the world's first animal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell. The work, which used the process of nuclear transfer, was conducted at the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh. Named after American actress Dolly Parton because the cell used to clone her was a mammary cell, Dolly lived to the age of six, leaving behind six offspring.
