On September 11th 2012, members of the Islamic militant group Ansar al-Sharia attacked the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, killing U.S. Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer Sean Smith. The group later launched a mortar attack against a CIA annex approximately one mile away from the compound. A total of four Americans dies in the attack.
